Quantum is a fully integrated alternative energy company that provides advanced fuel systems, electric drives, software control strategies and propulsion control system technologies for alternative fuel vehicles, in particular, plug-in electric hybrid, electric and hydrogen hybrid vehicles.

The company has previously developed the Q-Drive plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) system that powers the Fisker Karma, a high performance luxury sedan that was developed by Fisker Automotive, the green American car company that was co-founded by Fisker Coachbuild and QTWW. Q-Drive is a series hybrid systems; meaning that the engine is mated with a generator to provide an electrical connection to the motors and also recharge the batteries and as such the electric motors are the only mechanical driving force connected to the wheels.  The company recently announced the launching of the new hybrid drive system Quantum F-Drive specifically for the Ford F-150 pickup truck, one of the highest volume selling fleet vehicles in America.

The company’s flagship project, Fisker Automotive, has scheduled to launch Fisker Karma in the U.S. next July. QTWW and Fisker Coachbuild plan to produce and sell approximately 7,000 vehicles in 2011. The production agreement covers a minimum volume of 45,000 vehicles. The company is entitled to earn a royalty fee in the range of $3,200-$4,100 for each Fisker Karma vehicle sold that incorporates Q-Drive technology.

QTWW’s revenue soared 207% to $4.6 million for the last reporting quarter, Q3 FY 2011. The increase in revenue was due to increased development program revenue and initial product shipments to Fisker Automotive of components related to Q-Drive hybrid drive systems. The company reported a net loss of $7.7 million or $0.82 per share in Q3 FY 2011.

Going forward, QTWW is poised to expand its revenue driven by the worldwide launch of Fisker Karma, deployment of the new F-Drive hybrid technology, as well as increased awareness of carbon free energy. Also, the company has announced several new purchase contracts from large U.S. natural gas vehicle integrators and a $10 million contract from a major OEM related to the advanced fuel system technologies.

Over the long term, QTWW is poised to benefit from increasing oil prices, which create momentum for electric drive vehicles. Global electric-drive vehicle sales could jump from about 150,000 units in 2012 to about 400,000 units in 2015 and to about 1.25 million units in 2020, according to the Advanced Automotive Batteries consultancy. Meanwhile, Pike Research predicted that approximately 3.1 million electric vehicles could be sold through 2015. As a result, even with conservative estimates of the industry growth, demand for QTWW’s plug-in hybrid electric technologies to serve this end market could soar.
