OXiGENE (OXGN) is a clinical-stage, biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics to treat cancer and eye diseases. Investment Highlights

Drug maker OXGN saw its stock rise more than 7% in Monday’s trading after the Company announced that it is again in compliance with certain Nasdaq minimum market and stock value requirements, enabling the company’s shares to continue to be listed on Nasdaq.

Investors also welcomed the news of encouraging data from the Company’s phase ll/III trial of ZYBRESTAT (fosbretabulin tromethamine, or CA4P). The Company yesterday announced that it presented final results from a randomized, controlled phase II/III study of ZYBRESTAT in patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) at this year’s meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago, Illinois.The data were presented by Julie Sosa M.D., associate professor of Surgery and of Medicine at Yale University, and primary investigator in the study.

Dr. Sosa commented in the release: “The final FACT data suggest that patients treated with fosbretabulin plus chemotherapy experienced clinically meaningful increases in overall survival, which is a highly encouraging outcome in a patient population that has historically shown a survival rate of less than one year.” According to Dr. Sosa, “the suggestion of survival benefit is especially noteworthy given how quickly this cancer develops, and the observation that patients in this trial who experienced the most meaningful clinical benefit included those with poor prognostic factors and larger, more advanced tumors.”

OXGN CEO Peter J. Langecker M.D., Ph.D., said that the Company believes that the final data from the FACT study being presented at ASCO confirm its earlier analyses suggesting that ZYBRESTAT may represent a potential future treatment option for ATC patients who currently have very few treatment choices for this very aggressive disease. Langecker further stated that OXGN is hopeful the recently presented results will help to continue to build interest in ZYBRESTAT among potential pharmaceutical partners and the broader oncology community.

Only last week, the Company had reported encouraging data from the phase II trial of ZYBRESTAT in non-small cell lung cancer.  The Company presented updated safety and clinical activity data from the FALCON trial at the same ASCO meeting. The data were presented in a poster by Edward Garon, M.D., assistant professor of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles and primary investigator in the study.

According to Dr. Edward Garon, assistant professor of medicine at the University of California and primary investigator in the study,”The FALCON results show evidence of activity with an increased response rate in patients who were treated with the combination of ZYBRESTAT, bevacizumab and chemotherapy. Non-small cell lung cancer patients with a poorer performance status also had a clinically meaningful increase in time to progression in patients. These results are highly encouraging.  He went on to say that “the suggestion that this combination may be especially beneficial in a sicker patient population should be explored in a larger trial to delineate the potential of targeting more advanced patient populations with the combined effects of a vascular disrupting agent, anti-angiogenic and chemotoxic therapies.”

OXGN added $0.32 to close Monday’s session at $4.59.  Approximately 6.47 million shares have traded hands during the session, versus the 10-day average volume of 1.50 million.  Over the last 52 weeks, OXGN has seen a low of $1.52 and a high of $16.80. It is currently trading above its 50-day moving average of $3.25 and above its 200-day moving average of $3.41.

Financial Summary

OXGN reported a net loss of $0.9 million, or $0.13 per share, for the three months ended March 31, 2011, compared with a net loss of $11.0 million, or $3.42 per share, for the comparable three-month period in 2010. The change in net loss from the 2010 three-month period to the net loss in the 2011 three-month period was driven primarily by a reduction of approximately $3.3 million in operating expenses, as well as non-cash changes in the fair value of warrants and other financial instruments from a loss of $4.6 million in the 2010 three-month period to a gain of $2.2 million in the 2011 three-month period.

The decrease in operating expenses for the three-month period ended March 31, 2011, compared with the same period in 2010 is primarily the result of OXGN’s decision in February 2010 to implement a restructuring plan in order to focus the Company’s resources on its highest-value clinical assets and reduce its cash utilization.

At March 31, 2011, OXGN had cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash of approximately $2.7 million, compared with approximately $4.7 million at December 31, 2010. During the three months ended March 31, 2011, the Company raised approximately $1.63 million through sales of its common stock under an at-the-market equity offering sales agreement with McNicoll, Lewis & Vlak, which was executed in July 2010. During the period from April 1, 2011, through May 2, 2011, OXGN raised approximately $3 million through this same sales agreement.

OXGN is trading within its Bollinger Bands. This is a normal condition and suggests that the stock is neither overbought nor oversold relative to the recent price action.

OXGN’s MACD is indicating a weak bearish signal. Although the indicator is above the critical level of 0, which implies that the underlying moving averages are bullish, the MACD has crossed below its 9-minute moving average or signal line. It definitely isn’t going to zero, but right now traders and investors are down on GNBT…..for good reason.

Generex Biotechnology Corporation (GNBT) is a biotechnology company that is working on variations of its drug delivery systems for diabetes (and other illnesses).  Here is a link to their site if you want to do more DD.

GNBT has been trading in a range between $0.40 and $0.70 for the last 6 months.  Right now, it is trading at the bottom of that range.

I am not recommending that anyone “catch the falling knife” on this one, but I am thinking that GNBT is prime for a reversal.  For all of the negative press that GNBT has been receiving, the news that they have received a financing commitment is a positive indicator.  True, the financing is at a discount to GNBT’s current trading price.  But, the commitment is real and they have already drawn the first tranche.  It is composed of 24 tranches.  The financing guys are not stupid.  They want to be able to limit their exposure if things get worse for the company.

The negative press stems from the ever-irascible Adam Feuerstein of TheStreet.com, who called out GNBT and labeled them frauds.  The company responded with a $250 Million defamation suit.  I like MIchael Fizhugh’s article on SeekingAlpha.com about the whole mess.  Read it here.

The Chart

Clearly, GNBT is in a downtrend.  But, there is hope for a recovery.  In the last 5 trading days, there has been 3 high volume selling days BUT there have been two up days.  All the news is not bad.  It looks like buyers are trying to bid up the stock.  The oversold stochastics will exert some pressure for a bounce, but with the MACD still bearish, the stock could continue to fall for a while yet.

Watch for the MACD histogram to indicate that the bearish trend intensity is lessening.  Another indicator that I am using lately is On Balance Volume (OBV).  That indicator is telling me that the stock is still in distribution.

I am not qualified to pass judgment of GNBT’s drug portfolio.  I look at anecdotal information to give me some idea of whether this stock has a chance.  The financing is a huge indicator to me that GNBT will be around a bit longer.  The company has plenty of cash, low debt, great ratios….that will help them see this “crisis” through.   Any good FDA news and this stock will fly….Bad and the reverse will happen.

GNBT’s volatility is a great thing for short-term traders like us.
