    Small-Cap Stock Spotlight: EMCORE Corp. (EMKR) Shares Up following Q4 Results

    Shares of EMCORE Corp. (Nasdaq: EMKR) climbed as high as $1.16 Tuesday, recovering from the prior day’s losses when the semiconductor technologies provider reported its fourth-quarter results.  The stock saw trading volume hit 4.70 million shares yesterday, versus the 10-day average of over 334 K. Shares closed the session at $0.92, below the 50-day and 200-day moving averages of $0.95 and $1.61, respectively.

    Based in New Mexico, EMCORE offers a broad portfolio of compound semiconductor-based products for the broadband, fiber optics, satellite communications, defense & homeland security, and solar power markets. Its two primary operating segments are Fiber Optics and Solar Photovoltaics.

    Through its fiber optics segment, EMCORE provides optical components, subsystems and systems that enable the transmission of video, voice, and data over high-capacity fiber optic links. Through its solar photovoltaics segment, the Company provides products based on its high-efficiency Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) solar cells for both space and terrestrial solar power applications.

    For the fourth quarter ended September 30, 2011, EMCORE recorded consolidated revenue $52.1 million, a 4% decrease compared to the prior year and a 5% increase compared to the immediate preceding quarter.

    Revenue for the fiber optics segment was $30.9 million, which represents a 10% decrease compared to the prior year and a 7% decrease compared to the immediate preceding quarter. Revenue for the photovoltaics segment was $21.2 million, which represents an 8% increase compared to the prior year and a 31% increase compared to the immediate preceding quarter.

    The company realized a consolidated net loss of $34.2 million, which represents a $10.5 million increase in net loss when compared to the prior year. The consolidated net loss per share was $0.38, which represents a $0.10 increase in net loss per share when compared to the prior year.

    EMCORE, which fiber optics segment was negatively impacted by floods in Thailand, expects its first-quarter 2012 revenue to be in a range of $36 to $38 million.
