Now that Obama is packing for the white house, according to campaign promises, he should have US soldiers packing to leave Iraq. Despite the security vacuum critics say the move will create, Iraqi forces are making efforts to build up defenses and re-equip their army before U.S. forces have shipped out, which is estimated to be by 2011.
Defense Solutions Holding, Inc., a company that began publicly trading on the OTC Bulletin Boards under the symbol DFSH, is already working with the Iraqi army by supplying modern tanks similar to those the army has already been trained to use.
Many of the army’s tanks, originally from Russia, are stored in fields and technologically out of date. But supplying tanks with technology similar to those used by our own national defense would prove a difficult and costly transition for the Iraqi soldiers. DFSH has recently reported an agreement to supply Iraq with 2,000 tanks. The work is slated to begin in February and continue over the next couple of years as U.S. troops decrease in the area.
Because the Iraqi army has been trained on Eastern technology, Defense Solutions plans to buy out of date tanks from Eastern Europe, strip them down, and rebuild them with current technology added, such as thermal and laser technologies. But fundamentally, these tanks will be the same as the ones the government has been using for years. Therefore transition for Iraqi soldiers would be smoother with regard to training as well as more cost effective.
A competitive advantage that Defense Solutions has is their already established relationship with the Iraqi government, independent of United States contracts. Once prized U.S. defense contracts will no longer be valid and defense companies will have to realign themselves with the Iraqi government to continue supplying the country. Many defense companies leaning on U.S. contacts and licenses are going to be required to apply for licensing with the Iraqi government in order to vie for military defense jobs.
